Irena Fernandez Mena

Irene Fernández Mena is a saxophonist, artist and researcher. She teaches at the Conservatorio Superior de Música “Manuel Castillo” in Seville, becoming the first woman to obtain a professorship in saxophone in her field.

Her career combines solo and chamber music performance with pedagogical activity and artistic research, with a particular focus on the development of the saxophone as a concert instrument and on the expansion of its repertoire.

She maintains an active artistic career in national and international contexts, participating in concerts, festivals, artistic projects and educational activities, and collaborating with various institutions and musicians. Her work is characterised by the creation of programmes with a carefully constructed artistic discourse, establishing connections between tradition, reinterpretation and contemporary instrumental language.

In parallel, she promotes the visibility and dissemination of repertoire by women composers, integrating their works into her artistic activity and contributing to their presence in performance contexts.

Through her work as a performer and educator, she contributes to the international projection of Spanish musicians and to the recognition of the saxophone within today’s musical landscape.
